General information on health insurance

Health insurance is mandatory in Germany. The following forms are generally distinguished:

Statutory health insurance (GKV)

Statutory health insurance is regulated by law. The scope of benefits is largely standardised; contributions and additional contributions are set by the respective health insurance funds.

Private health insurance (PKV)

Private health insurance is available to certain groups of people. The scope of benefits and admission requirements are defined by each insurer in its policy conditions.

Supplementary insurance

Supplementary policies can extend existing cover, for example for dental treatment or inpatient care. The scope follows the provider's conditions.
